Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

  • What is the IRPP (Institute for Road Pricing Professionals)? The IRPP is the definitive global body dedicated to codifying the Road Pricing Professional (RPP) credential and maintaining the industry’s first standardized Body of Knowledge (BoK).

  • What is the RPP Credential? The RPP is a multidisciplinary credential established and maintained by IRPP that validates an individual's expertise across the defined core pillars of the domain.

  • Is the IRPP a membership organization? Yes, but unlike trade associations that tend to represent organizations, IRPP, as an independent certifying body focused exclusively on the individual practitioner, it is an individual membership because the credential stays with you through your career.

  • Who should pursue this credential? A diverse range of professionals, from recent graduates and new practitioners to engineers, analysts, IT specialists, finance managers, and policy planners who want to master the complexities of the road pricing sector.

Body of Knowledge (BoK)

  • What is a "Body of Knowledge" (BoK)? A BoK is a comprehensive "Source of Truth" for the industry. It is a collection of essential principles and technical standards that ensures every RPP-credentialed professional speaks a unified technical language.

  • Why do you need a standardized BoK? Currently, industry knowledge is siloed within, and somewhat unique to, specific operators or firms. As the founding generation of experts nears retirement, the BoK ensures this critical domain expertise is preserved and referencable to the next generation.

  • How often is the BoK updated? The BoK is a living document. While core domain principles are static and constant, the Subject Matter Expert Advisory Group (SMEAGs) updates technical modules, which are dynamic and are republished every two years to reflect innovations in technology, policy and models.

Exam & Eligibility

  • When will the first testing window open? IRPP is currently in the stage of curriculum validation. Sign up for notifications on our My IRPP page to be the first to know when the launch date is announced.

  • I have many years of experience, so do I have to take the exam? Professionals with significant industry contributions may be eligible for the RPP Fellow designation. This is an appointed status for the "architects" of the industry, determined by a combination of an interview, resume, and career analysis.

  • How do I earn an IRPP credential? Candidates must demonstrate a baseline of industry experience by passing a timed examination based on the RPP-BoK.

  • Is the RPP credential recognized? Yes. IRPP is a new credential, but it is based on the RPP-BoK, which it comprised of recognized standards of road pricing knowledge as approved by the SMEAG, making the credential valid as well as portable across jurisdictions and technology platforms.

Costs & Maintenance

  • How much does the credential cost? Pricing will be announced when the first testing window date is announced (late 2026) and will be in line with other industry credentials (e.g. PMP, AICP).

  • How do I maintain my credential? Technology and policy evolves, so to ensure credentialed professionals remain at the forefront, they must participate in a Maintenance of Credential (MOC) program, which includes annual continuing education credits.

  • What are the benefits to my company? The RPP allows operators and firms to standardize the technical language for their teams, which can reduce onboarding time for new hires, and ensure that staff are trained to a verified, industry-accepted benchmark.

  • What is the IRPP-LLM? A road pricing domain-specific AI assistant, something trained on the RPP Body of Knowledge that IRPP credentialed practitioners can query.
